“When the Doors go up” is a wonderful coffee table style book full of colour photos and history of Fire Fighting and Rescue in Woodend and North Canterbury over the last 50 years.   This book chronicles the brigade and its endeavours from its birth as a small rural fire fighting force in the early 1960’s, to its current status as the fastest growing fire district in NZ. At 216 pages it is a substantial book and is packed full of stories, tales and characters past and present. From horrific motor vehicle accidents on one of the worst stretches of State Highway 1 in the South Island, to hot, tinder dry Canterbury wild fires and sobering accounts of the Canterbury earthquakes, this book makes for compelling reading. This book provides a fascinating insight into volunteer fire fighting in NZ.  Books are available for $20 a copy plus postage and packaging.
